Lydia Bittner-baird

When making a photo, I am interested in acknowledging the references that emerge from my subconscious. These are sometimes the works of other artists, moments from my own life, or patterns repeated by subjects from image to image. The camera invites and instigates. As it does this I apply the cerebral and physical practices that have become familiar to me through my past work as a professional contemporary dancer. For me the accumulation of this exchange, rich with debris, is then thrown into an intuitive washing machine from which I meticulously pull out works that I hope will engage the viewer and re-acquaint the subject to itself.
